Your website is one of the most important facets of your business. Whether your business is online or offline, it is your website that acts as a link between you, your business and the world out there.

While people will never physically see you behind your computer, they expect you to dress neat and smart. The same applies where website design is concerned. Simply put, you website can make or break your business, make no mistake about it.

If presented with two candidates for a sales job, one shabbily dressed while the other neat and presentable, you will naturally pick the neat guy to do you sale for you. This is because a smart salesperson will be a reflection of the care and attention that you put on your business. First impression still counts!

This is the main reason why your website must never be anything less than good, user friendly and attractive.

Is your website shabby or neat? Put yourself in the place of your visitor and ask whether you would stay in your own website for more than two minutes. Never underestimate the power of the first impression as it is what will determine how long your visitors, who are also your customers, will stay on your site. Remember, their first visit will also determine whether they will return or not.

Never seek to go above the top with your web design exercise trying to make it what it is not. The design you opt for should be relevant and unique with all the impressions of a professional look. Give a sense of professionalism to your site as this will let your customers know that you are in serious business and not out to take money out of people’s pockets without giving anything back.

Everything in your website must have a professional representation which should also extend to other outlets like business cards, brochures and letters.

You need to develop a professional website that will give people the ability to randomly look at it once and associate it with your business. Use your website to develop a brand for your business.

Think of your website as your full time salesman and figure out the kind of representation that you would want it to give to you, whether neat or shabby.

WordPress is a publishing platform which focuses on web standards and uses. It was started in the year 2003 with a humble beginning. But to day, it is one of the successful self-hosted blogging tool in the world used by millions of people on a daily basis. It can be stated here that wordpress is one step ahead of content management system because of the fact that it promotes itself by building a huge community and also campaigns about businesses, products, services and social communication network. There is absolute freedom to work on wordpress and there are already huge number of people who are working and drawing benefit from wordpress.

Within wordpress there is wordpress.com and wordpress.org which carry different purposes. WordPress.Org enables you to download and install a software called WordPress. In order to download this, you need to have minimum requirements specified by wordpress.org. When you meet this requirements, you can download wordpress and install it. Wordpress is similar to blogging system but over the years, it has emerged as a content management system and there are also more plugins, widgets and themes which are beyond one’s imagination.

On line forums, mailing lists are a great way to get connected with the community and this is similar to the position of a volunteer of WHO or Red Cross society. WordPress enables you to get connected with other users of WordPress and can exchange news, information and views. History of WordPress can be brief as, it was born of PHP and MySQL and licensed under GPL. WordPress is a fresh software which is aimed to maintain web standards and it can also work as a tool for different purposes. On one side, it is works as a web blog and on the other side, it runs from different directories. WordPress Multi-User allows multiple blogs to exist within one installation and it makes it possible for anyone with a web site to host their own blogging community. Further a blog can be monitored, controlled and administered.

Such wonderful facility of blogging is a great means to campaign and advertise your products and business through WordPress is of great benefit to the users. Those who know about WordPress do not like to work away from it, but on a daily basis, would interact in a more convenient method with WordPress. Lyceum is another edition of WordPress but there are only notable communities who use Lyceum, as it is aimed at Teaching blogs. In less than a decade, WordPress has worked very hard to achieve its wide presence on web and with this it can be expected a greater advantage and benefit from WordPress as millions of users continue to use it for their personal benefit and advantage.

Photoshop is our main weapon of choice when it comes to manipulating photographs and images. The sheer power of the application and number of options available is stunning. It takes a long time to become proficient with it, mainly because of all those options, so we thought we could save you some time and highlight some of the most popular do’s and don’ts of photo retouching.

Firstly, don’t overdo the Clone Stamp. This is the most popular method of retouching but can produce bad results if you overdo it. Using too high opacity and/or hardness can give the area a blocky feel which shows up on the end result. Try to avoid using the clone too if at all possible, but if you have to use it, use low opacity and a softer brush where you can. If all else fails, a quick swish of the Blur tool over the affected area could solve all your problems.

The Healing Brush is the best tool to use if the Clone Stamp isn’t doing it for you. It not only ‘cuts and pastes’ like Clone Stamp, it also tries to blend in with the target area. As long as you remember to change the sample drop down to include all layers and soften the hardness a bit to make a good heal.

Do try and use the Pen tool a bit more. In our experience it is a tool that isn’t used as much as it should be. Out of everything in the Photoshop arsenal, the Pen tool is the most precise tool you can use for selecting small areas. This is especially true for portraits and selecting eyes and teeth. Simply outline the section, right click then select “Make Selection”.

Do try to modify backgrounds using the Magic Eraser tool. It isn’t the most elegant tool in the box, but it’s very useful when you have a perfectly composed picture on a terrible background.

Change the tolerance to 15, select Contiguous and select the area. This will also get rid of neighboring pixels with the same colors. This will give a much better end result than if Contiguous isn’t selected. It isn’t always clever to remove all of the background, but it will give you somewhere to start.

Don’t forget the other selection tools. Each tool is designed to be good in a given situation. Tools like the Elliptical Marquee for instance is ideal for those new to Photoshop and great for selecting larger elements within an image. The Lasso and the Magnetic Lasso are also good for outlining if you have a steady hand. The Magic Wand, with a low tolerance is ideal for more solid objects.

Those are just a few do’s and don’ts of Photoshop, it is a massive product, and an equally massive subject but hopefully we have added some value with this information that will help you in your quest to master the program.

Continuing the discussion on securing your Wordpress installation we explore some more ways of securing the installation from unwanted attention.

Use a Strong Password

At the risk of laboring a point as I’m sure everyone knows this already, using a strong password is the simplest most effective way of keeping your site secure. Using a strong word or phrase with higher and lower case characters, including numbers will drastically improve the site security. Microsoft has a page for password checking which can help check the strength and a page offering advice on choosing a strong password.

Keep Up To Date

Keeping the Wordpress install up to date is as easy as it gets. Later versions of the platform does it for you automatically. If you see the ‘new version is available’ banner in your admin page, backup your database then do the update. These are often fixes for security and should be installed as soon as possible.

Care should be taken that your current theme and plugins will work with the new version. While you should upgrade as soon as possible, it pays to wait a few days before rushing in. This gives the plugin programmers to update their various programs to ensure compatibility. The theme may also need checking, depending on what changes have been made in the new Wordpress version. Security updates are often invisible to the theme so won’t affect them. Some however might, so it’s best to check with your friendly web designer.

If you find the new version doesn’t work with your template, the database backup can be re-instated and you can manually load the previous version of Wordpress. The whole process should only take 10 minutes.

Secure WP_Admin

The wp_admin folder is the most important folder on your website because it contains all the administration files for the site. It makes sense to lock this down nice and tight to prevent havoc being wreaked in your name.

If you run Apache, the easiest way to secure it is to restrict it through the .htaccess file. Add the following to your .htaccess file, or create one and add this code.

order deny, allow

allow from 123.456.789.000

deny from all

Enter your own IP address where you see the 123.456.789.000. This may cause problems for those of you not on cable whose IP addresses change often, but it will work for the rest of us.

As you can see, most of these tips only take a minute or two to implement, but are very effective once done. These measure should become part of your website administration routine whenever you launch a new site. The more secure Wordpress becomes, the less likely hackers will waste their time trying to hack it.

This is a two part post about securing a Wordpress installation. Wordpress is one of the most popular CMS out there today. Partly because it’s so easy to use, easy to manage and takes much of the thought out of maintaining a website. Partly because it’s good, and free.

It’s a great publishing platform and quite secure, but it isn’t immune to everything. There are hackers and spammers out there who would take your site down in a heartbeat if you let them. Here are some tips on securing your Wordpress site.

Back Up

You should be regularly backing up your database anyway as part of the website maintenance. Depending on how often your site is updated this should be done weekly if not daily. There are Wordpress plugins that can take care of it all for you, or you can do it manually for full control. I use the Wordpress Database Backup plugin that performs a weekly backup automatically then emails me the copy. That way I always have a copy of the latest one in case the worst happens.

The database is the core of your site and should be protected at all costs. As well as regular backups, ensure the password is a strong one and never share it with anyone. Automating the backup process takes the thought out of it, and allows your system to look after itself. With the best will in the world, we are human after all and other things often take priority over mundane tasks like backups.

Keep Your Wordpress Version to Yourself

This may seem a little over the top, but displaying the Wordpress version number in the code lets hackers know exactly what vulnerabilities your are open to. By hiding this information, you make it that little bit harder for malicious attackers to try and gain access to your site.

If the version number appears when you do a “show source” then look for the following code in your header.php.

Remove this code and the version number should disappear, adding that little extra bit of security to the proceedings.

Get Rid of the Admin

Getting rid of the Admin login should have been one of the first things you did once the site was up and running. The Wordpress installation creates an Admin account by default so this is often the first place a hacker will look when trying to gain access to your site.

Create a new user from the Admin Panel and give it administrator rights. Then logout, then in again using the new username. Delete the Admin user and attribute all pages and posts to your new user in order to keep them.

That’s all there is to it, yet you have very quickly made it very difficult to a hacker to gain entry into your site.

Many designs, website or otherwise depends on photographic elements to make it work. Using non-stock photography can be an expensive proposition and reaches way past the budget of the average web studio or graphic artist. All is not lost though, as there are resources online that permits the use of photographs for free. This provides the opportunity for the artist to create their work and make a living at the same time. Here are some of those resources.

First up is Stock.xchng with one of the shortest URLs around, this site offers free photos for designers. The downside is that it is very popular, so any image you find will probably already have been used multiple times. Not a problem if it’s going to be heavily modified, but it might be if you’re trying to build a commercial site. There are currently over 350,000 images on there, so you’re bound to find something you like.

Next is Pixel Perfect Digital. This isn’t the easiest site to browse as it has a forum type feel to it. It takes a little digging to find what you need, but what is there is good quality. The site name says it all, the pictures are posted by, and often post processed by professional photographers. They currently have around 7500 images to choose from.

Freerange Stock is a somewhat idealistic site with a noble goal. It provides professional quality stock images for free so they can be used and enjoyed by the widest audience. The contributors are all members of the site and also post-process their images when they upload them. There aren’t so many on here, but where there are, are well worth a look.

Openphoto.net is a basic looking site and is often used a bit like Flickr, so there is a mix of qualities on here. The collection has been going for over 10 years now so they have an extensive catalog of images to choose from. There is a basic search engine or you can use tags to find what you’re looking for.

Stockvault is a slick looking site that has a decent collection of photos, all under the Creative Commons Distribution license. There is approximately 16,000 photographs in the collection which are accessed via a menu, tags or a search engine.

DeviantART is a site known to just about everyone who is into photography and design. Apart from some fantastic licensed work by talented artists and photographers, there is also a stock section where there are images and photographs of every description free to use with a credit.

Those are just a few sites with a good selection of free to use stock photos and images. Acquiring photos to use in web or graphic designs doesn’t have to be expensive. As long as proper credit is given to the original photographer or artist, there is no reason why they should cost anything at all.

Being able to manage and maintain a website from a single interface that is easy to use is what a CMS is all about. It is what clients demand now they know the technology is out there. We used to have to convince clients to try them as they were often more expensive to develop than traditional websites. Now they pretty much sell themselves.

The ability for an organization to manage its own content is now a pre-requisite for any design we undertake. It works for the client, and it works for us. We are web designers and developers. None of us really want to spend the day copy and pasting content onto a website. Neither does the client want to pay us $$$ an hour to do it. By using a CMS, a member of the client’s staff can do it at no extra cost to them.
By using a CMS, a member of the client’s staff can do it at no extra cost to them.

Developing an SEO friendly CM system is of further benefit to clients as they will in turn have to spend less on SEO efforts on their behalf. While it does cost more to create an SEO friendly CMS, it saves money in the long run. SEO is an expensive and time consuming business. It takes a lot of effort and skill to make it to the top of the SERPs, which doesn’t come for free.

An SEO friendly CMS should be able to do a few things.

It should generate URLs that use optimization techniques as well as provide for easy navigation. Having your keywords in the URL is an effective SEO technique, but they also have to be understandable by human visitors as well as robot ones. Getting this balance right is one of the aims of a good SEO aware CMS.

A good system will be able to generate its own sitemap in XML. That should happen both automatically and on request as search engines like Google and Bing like sitemaps as is makes crawling the site that little bit easier.

The CMS templates should have the ability to add alt-tags to images to add to the overall SEO strategy. They should also be easily updatable, reflect the brand of the company they represent and have working alternatives for incompatible browsers.

The layout of the site should be logical and follow an established hierarchy. Navigation should be easy to follow and not confuse visitors, human or robot. A site must be quickly and easily crawled, however large it might be in order to rate highly in the SERPs.

A CMS that considers itself SEO friendly should contain all of these elements. There are plenty of other features than are SEO friendly, but these should be the absolute minimum.

Not all websites have to be voluminous and contain multiple pages or hundreds of blog posts about something or other. There are many kinds of one-page websites, from squeeze pages, portfolios to sales pages for Acai berries or eBooks.

A single page doesn’t have to follow the rules a standard website does, but should have the same qualities if they are to be a success. One of those qualities is good navigation. While it isn’t going to be as important on a single page site as say a large corporate one, it is still important especially for a landing page.

Navigation can be used to display different content on the single page to allow it to work more like a standard website. In that way a one page site can hold as much information as a normal website. For example, a Flash based website can have content appear once a navigation option is clicked. These are quite popular as a lot of information can be held, but in such a way that doesn’t clutter the page.

Vertical navigation with a strong visual indicator is another way to use a single page as a website. For example Bullet PR uses a single pages, with a wavy line which you can follow to get to the content. There is also a static navigation option if you don’t notice the line. This is a great example of a single page site.

This concept can be flipped 90 degrees and used horizontally too to great effect. With a single page, the content within the screen rule can be ignored if it’s done well enough.

Alternatively you can have a page with no navigation like graphic designer James Lai. This is an excellent example of think around navigation and using page elements to their best advantage. There is everything you need on that one page, including a scrolling portfolio section accessed by thumbnails. This design subtly focuses all your attention on his work rather than the site itself.

No site can do without content, which is another essential ingredient of all websites, let alone a single page. The page has to have a purpose, a reason for being, and content is it.

With a single page site the content has to be short, sharp and to the point. You have to get your message across with a lot less space and in a lot less words. The clever use of graphics can also illustrate a point without lots of words if done right like with this app site for the iPhone.

There is much more to web design that the standard multi-page hierarchy and navigation buttons. With the application of a little imagination, and a little skill with web design tools you can create amazing pages that look much larger than they actually are.

Even thought the internet is a relatively new medium, things get old pretty quickly. The problem with being at the cutting edge of technology is that it isn’t cutting edge for long. After enough time has passed, everything begins to look old and out of date. Technological progress marches on without a second thought to those it leaves behind.

If you have a website that you use for business then you appreciate that it must be current and up to date. Old and tired looking sites aren’t going to give a good impression of any business, let alone make sales. That said, not every site needs a makeover as soon as the next big thing arrives, some more neutral designs can stand the test of time.

The main reasons a site should be redesigned is to improve usability, or when the company changes its brand. There is always the desire to take advantage of newer, more powerful technology but that only works if the site design will take advantage of it.

If there have been advances that will significantly improve the user experience then it’s well worth the upgrade, as anything that engages the audience more is a good thing, however much it costs. If you have an older HTML only site or one with frames, then moving to a CMS would also be a good move. It allows updates to happen quicker, provides for sleeker designs, and less downtime, plus it needs less maintenance in the long run.

If you’re planning a site makeover, thought must be given to the effect the new design will have on your visitors. Most people have habits, and like consistency in their lives. We don’t always appreciate it when things change, especially if we don’t know the reason why. Changing an established website is much like changing a company brand. You need to ensure that there is enough of the old identity in the new design that customers old and new can still identify with it. If they can’t, you may lose them.

A redesign takes much longer to plan than building a new site from scratch. Building a new site is pretty much a blank canvas. All that has to be borne in mind is the existing brand, the rest is freedom. A redesign is different in that it has to build on what was there before and improve on it. It has something to live up to and a legacy of existing users to retain as well as attract new ones. It has to offer new things to the user without alienating existing visitors.

The decision to redesign a website comes down to a choice between aesthetics or purpose. If you just want a change then a redesign may do more harm than good. If the redesign will change and improve the functionality then it might not be such a bad idea.
